Lifeguards and paramedics attempt to revive a drowning victim at Hanauma Bay Friday morning.

A couple from Washington state was found dead at Hanauma Bay Friday morning, drowning after apparently getting into trouble while snorkeling.

The man, 60, and woman, 55, were brought in from about 200 yards offshore near an area known as Witches Brew, according to Emergency Medical Services personnel.

A hiker spotted the couple’s bodies in the water from a trail above the bay.

An employee, who asked not to be identified, said they were pulled from the water between 10:20 a.m. and 10:40 a.m.

Lifeguards used personal watercraft to retrieve them, and although resuscitation attempts were made the couple was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said one of them may have gotten into trouble in the water and the other may have tried to help but both ended up drowning.

Local resident Sun Young Mack, 55, who was at Hanauma Bay with out-of-town guests, said she saw cuts and scratches on the leg of one of the victims.
