A U.S. Marine was charged Saturday in connection with a driving escapade that targeted two police officers, tied up traffic for hours, and stretched from Kaneohe to Nuuanu.

Sean Michael Shipe, 22, was charged Saturday morning with first-degree criminal property damage and first-degree terroristic threatening. His bail was set at $200,000. Shipe had been arrested for investigation of two counts of first-degree attempted murder, but the charges were downgraded.

Police said Shipe was initially stopped for speeding on the H-3 freeway near Mokapu Saddle Road at 12:45 p.m. Thursday before he swerved his car in the direction of an officer on foot, then headed into Kaneohe.

In Kaneohe, Shipe turned around and drove his Scion toward Honolulu via Pali Highway, then reversed his car and struck a solo bike officer at Pali Highway and Nuuanu Pali Drive, police said.

Shipe headed back toward Kailua and crashed into a vehicle near Castle Junction, where he was arrested. The final crash caused traffic congestion for hours as police investigated.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii officials confirmed Shipe is a Marine at the Kaneohe base. 

Shipe has a history of street racing.

In 2013 and 2014, he pleaded no contest to racing. In the 2013 case, Shipe was arrested on suspicion of traveling 116 mph in a 55 mph zone.
