"Patience" will be the key word for Oahu drivers this week as a dizzying array of roadwork continues around the island.
Several closures are scheduled on Kalanianaole Highway, including two westbound lanes between East Halemaumau Street and East Hind Drive (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.); one westbound lane between East Hind Drive and Nenue Street (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.); one eastbound lane between Hawaii Kai Drive and Lunalilo Home Road (Thursday, 8:30 am. to 3 p.m.); and the eastbound shoulder between Hawaii Kai Drive and Lunalilo Home Road (Monday through Thursday, 8:30 to 3 p.m.).
In addition, lane and road closures related to the Honolulu rail transit project are ongoing on the H-1 freeway in Pearl City, Farrington Highway in Waipahu and Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City, Aiea and around Pearl Harbor.
Other scheduled lane closures include but are not limited to:
» Waimalu to Waipahu: H-1 freeway westbound between the Pearl City/Waimalu offramp and the H-1/ H-2 split for road widening. Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
» Kaneohe: H-3 freeway in both directions between the Kamehameha Highway offramp and the Mokapu Boulevard underpass for drain cleaning and inspection. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
» Makaha: Farrington Highway southbound between Makau and Upena streets for utility maintenance. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
» Waianae: Farrington Highway both directions between Guard Street and Lualualei Homestead Road for pavement reconstruction and utility repairs. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
» Laie: Kamehameha Highway southbound between Anemoku Street and Pakelo Place for paving. Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 3 p.m.
» Mililani: Kamehameha Highway northbound between Ka Uka Boulevard and Waihau Street for guardrail installations. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
» Waikele: Kamehameha Highway northbound at the Lumiaina Street intersection as part of the Lumiaina Street Traffic Improvements project. Monday through Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, a monthlong repaving project on Atkinson Drive is set to begin Monday.
The project will include the reconstruction, milling and resurfacing of concrete pavement; reconstruction of curbs and gutters; tree trimming; adjustment of utilities to finish grade; and the installation of permanent pavement markings and vehicle loop sensors.
Work will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Night paving is scheduled for 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Additional paving might also be done from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays if necessary.
Motorists are advised to avoid Atkinson Drive if possible.
Preliminary work continues on the repaving of Kapahulu Avenue.
Last week crews began installing new concrete bus pads in preparation for the busy corridor between Kaimuki and Waikiki to be repaved starting next month.
