Kauai man injured after allegedly resisting arrest

A 21-year-old Kapaa man wanted on a warrant was injured Thursday morning while allegedly resisting arrest in Wai-lua, the Kauai Police Department said.

Officers responded at 9 a.m. Thursday to a possible domestic altercation near the Kin-taro Japa-nese Restaurant parking lot, police said.

The officers recognized Benjamin Brown, who was wanted on a $50,000 cash bench warrant. He had failed to appear Feb. 11 at a hearing for a case in which he was charged with 15 counts of theft, identity theft and forgery, police said.

Police said Brown fled on foot and headed toward a residential area, then returned to the scene on a bicycle while allegedly continuing to evade police. He then returned a second time, when an officer tried to arrest him.

Brown allegedly resisted arrest, a struggle ensued and the officer fired a stun gun.

Brown was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital “for medical evaluation due to injuries sustained during the incident,” police said.

A spokeswoman for the department could not be reached for more details about possible charges Brown might face and whether his injuries were due to the stun gun.

The officer also was taken to Wilcox, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
