Student missing from Japanese training vessel near Hawaii
A student on a Japanese training vessel was reported missing and presumed overboard off Kauai on Tuesday.
The Coast Guard said it was searching for the 17-year-old student about 138 miles southwet of Kauai after being notified at 9:56 a.m. that he was overboard from the Hokuho Maru, which was heading from Honolulu to Japan.
The student was last seen at 2:50 a.m., and was reported missing after not showing up for muster. He had been wearing a light green jump suit.
A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules airplane crew from Barbers Point was diverted from a training mission to begin a search, and Coast Guard cutters Kittiwake and Kiska are enroute to join the search.
The Hokuho Maru is currently retracing its route to search for the missing student, the Coast Guard said..
