An 8-year-old student was hit by a van less than 100 yards from Nanaikapono Elementary School in Nanakuli on Wednesday.
The boy was treated by paramedics and transported to a hospital in serious condition, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.
Some residents of Mano Avenue, where the accident occurred, said they’re unsure what caused the accident, but said they’d like to see speed bumps put in.
They also said Mano Avenue should be shut down as a through-street during school hours.
"It would really help out," said Allen Mahoe.
The incident occurred at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday near a canal within sight of the school, which has about 867 students enrolled.
Izekiel Wakinekona, another Mano Avenue resident, said there are signs posted showing a school nearby and listing the speed limit at 25 mph, but that vehicles often go above that.
"They got to learn how to slow down," he said
Wakinekona said that from inside his house, he heard two thumps and knew it was a vehicle accident.
He said that by the time he came out, the boy was lying on the edge of the road and a white van was nearby.
"The guy in the white van said the kid darted out on the road," Wakinekona said.
Charallen Mahoe said the boy had a broken leg and that the driver said the child hit the side of the van.
