A 34-year-old man was awaiting charges in police custody Sunday after a woman was fatally stabbed in her home in Wahiawa.
Police said the woman, 30, sustained a single stab wound to her torso at about 6 p.m. Saturday. Paramedics took her to Wahiawa General Hospital, where she died.
The suspect, also of Wahiawa, was arrested at the hospital at 8:25 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of second-degree murder. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is withholding his name because he was not charged as of Sunday afternoon.
A Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said firefighters were dispatched for medical assistance to an assault at a Nakula Street home.
While the victim’s identity was not immediately released, neighbors on Nakula Street said she was the suspect’s younger sister.
One neighbor, who declined to give his name, recalled attending high school with the suspect and said he was quiet and kept to himself. He said the family has five siblings.
"I don’t think it was (the suspect)" who stabbed the woman, he said. "I don’t think he could do that to his sister."
"They’re a good family," the man added. "We’ve never had a problem with them before."
The case was the third murder or attempted murder investigation Honolulu police opened Saturday.
Dean Victor Matuu, 19, was charged with second-degree murder after his uncle was stabbed during an argument Saturday morning in Pacific Palisades. Matuu’s bail was set at $250,000.
Family members identified the victim as Frank Kapesi, 36, who lived with his nephew in the home where he was stabbed on Aumakua Street.
Police said officers found Kapesi unresponsive with stab wounds at about 5 a.m. Saturday.
Paramedics took Kapesi in extremely critical condition to the hospital, where he died.
Matuu was arrested at the home at 6:25 a.m. Saturday.
About five hours earlier a 27-year-old man was arrested for investigation of attempted murder after a 51-year-old man was found unconscious in Chinatown.
That incident occurred sometime after 9:15 p.m. Friday, police said.
The younger man was fighting with the older man when the older man became unresponsive and was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
Police arrested the younger man on River Street at 1:40 a.m. Saturday.
Prosecutors later declined to charge the man, and he was released.
