Hawaiian Electric Co. is no longer asking customers to take extra conservation efforts in the evening.

The company said Wednesday that its power plant crews have made progress on repairs to two of the largest generating units on Oahu that went offline Monday, which led to rolling outages across the island. 

Crews from AES, an independent power producer, are working on a 180-megawatt generating unit. AES operates the largest generating unit on the island. Hawaiian Electric crews also are continuing to work on a 135-megawatt generating unit at the Kahe Power Plant. Both plants are expected to operate at about half their normal capacity while repairs are being completed, HECO said in an update. 

Based on the island’s forecasted demand, the power produced by the two plants — combined with the generation from other available units — provides enough generation to meet customers’ energy needs, HECO said. 

A third power plant, Kalaeloa Partners, was offline for maintenance Monday when the AES and Kahe power plants experience technical problems. The Kalaeloa Partners plant will be offline until next weekend.
