KEAAU >> Big Island elementary school students whose campus remains closed because of a lava flow will be celebrating makahiki season of a school year marked by transition and change.

The state Department of Education says Keonepoko Elementary will be celebrating a cultural day on Monday at the temporary site that was built in anticipation of the lava. The event will celebrate the new year.

Keonepoko’s campus in Pahoa has been closed since October because it sat in the lava’s path.

A temporary site was built in the parking lot of Keaau High School.

The event will include activities such as a global positioning system scavenger hunt, traditional makahiki games, poi pounding and taiko drumming. There will also be hands-on educational activities about lava and the implications of diverting lava flows.
