A man remained in critical condition Thursday after being injured in the face by exploding fireworks on Kuhi Street in Waialua.
His case was among 10 fireworks-related injuries reported in the 12-hour period ending at 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.
The department also aided 12 people who had breathing difficulties from the smoke, a spokeswoman said.
At least three people suffered eye injuries, including a 6-year-old boy in Waimanalo. The boy was injured by a popper to the eye, but a parent refused to allow him to go to the emergency room, emergency services said.
An 18-year-old man was looking down the tube of an aerial firework when he was shot in the eye. He was transported in serious condition to Tripler Army Medical Center.
In Waianae, a 22-year-old man was injured in the eye when aerial fireworks exploded in a plastic plumbing pipe, emergency services said. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
On Maui, fire crews responded to three trash/dumpster fires that were suspected to be fireworks-related.
The Maui Fire Department also said a tree fire near Manele Bay, Lanai, was also most likely fireworks-related because it broke out high in the tree.
Three car fires, in Olowalu and Kihei, Maui, and Hoolehua, Molokai, and a utility pole fire in Makawao were not related to fireworks, the department said.
The Maui incidents all happened in the 24 hours ending at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
No reports of fireworks injuries were available Thursday from Kauai and Hawaii counties.
