Roy’s restaurant franchises sold

STAR-ADVERTISER / 2007
The Roy's Restaurant in Waikiki located at the Embassy Suites Hotel at Lewers and Kalia Street is not included in a sale of franchised Roy's restaurants.

The 29-unit Roy’s restaurant chain on the mainland has been sold to a Dallas-based Applebee’s franchisee, according to an industry publication.

Nation’s Restaurant News reports that Bloomin’ Brands Inc., parent company of Outback Steakhouse, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Bonefish Grill and Carrabba’s Italian Grill, announced early last month it would sell the Roy’s brand after deciding it would perform better “outside the portfolio,” Elizabeth Smith, Bloomin’ Brands CEO said, at the time.

Terms for the sale to United Ohana LLC, a company formed for the transaction, were no released. The company was formed by Sunil Dharod, who operates 69 Applebee’s restaurants and owns several commercial real estate properties, NRN reported.

For the weeks since the Roy’s franchises were put on the market, officials at Bloomin’ Brands and the local Roy’s restaurant operation, have declined repeated requests for comment to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Nevertheless, the deal is not expected to affect namesake Roy Yamaguchi’s wholly owned and operated restaurants in Hawaii, including the Hawaii Kai, Waikiki, Ko Olina, Kaanapali, Waikoloa and Poipu locations.
