A new edition of the Hawaiian-English language New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs is now available.
This marks the first time the bilingual Bible includes the modern Hawaiian text alongside New American Standard English text and that Psalms and Proverbs appear in a bilingual format, according to a news release issued by Mutual Publishing in conjunction with Partners in Development Foundation.
After 10-plus years of research involving dozens of scholars, teachers and volunteers, along with funding from various foundations and individuals, "Ke Kauoha Hou me Ka Buke o Na Halelu a me Na ‘Olelo Akamai a Solomona" is available in the modern orthography that uses complete diacritical markings.
The text presents the Hawaiian language with ‘okina and kahako markings. Words and their meanings in both languages can easily be compared, facilitating the learning process.
"Ke Kauoha Hou" includes the Ten Commandments in English and Hawaiian, the New American Standard Concordance with Hawaiian equivalents, a 19th-century Hawaii timeline, biblical maps in English and Hawaiian, and a "helps page" in Hawaiian that aids readers in finding key verses.
Partners in Development Foundation held a blessing for the new Bible on Aug. 24 at Kalihi and Moanalua Church, and with Kamehameha Schools held a celebration Sept. 4 at the Mission Houses Museum.
A special edition, which includes a short piece about Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, is also available to Kamehameha Schools students, teachers and alumni, as well as Hawaiian civic clubs and churches.
The new Bible can be found at bookstores including Logos Bookstore and Na Mea Hawai‘i, and online at www.mutualpublishing.com. For more information, call 380-1022.
