A grand jury on Maui indicted a 22-year-old man who allegedly drove into a crowd of people just before the start of the Maui Marathon on Sept. 21.

Rustyn Pajimola-Aiu of Kahului is charged with second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangering, and operating a vehicle under the Influence of an intoxicant. His bail was set at $50,000.

Police arrested him Tuesday on the grand jury indictment.

Maui Police said Pajimola-Aiu tried to drive his 2014 Acura sedan out of the parking lot of the Kaahumanu Shopping Center via Onehee Avneue Road and Wakea Avenue early in the morning of Sept. 21.

At the time, there was a large crowd for the start of the Maui Marathon.

Pajimola-Aiu continued to drive through the crowd and stuck a 53-year-old man, police said.

The man was dragged 30 feet and sustained minor injuries before bystanders were able to stop the car.

Pajimola-Aiu was arrested and charged for drunk driving and for an outstanding bench warrant.
