The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said Saturday that a 33-year-old Canadian visitor who was found face down off Kuhio Beach had drowned.

Mark Gaborro had been surfing at Waikiki Beach Thursday when he was found 75 yards off shore, his surfboard leash detached from his ankle, Emergency Medical Services said.

Gaborro, of Alberta, Canada, died Thursday at the hospital. The Medical Examiner’s ruled the death an accident and said other significant factors remain under investigation.

A high surf advisory was in effect on south shore beaches Thursday.
