Prison populations increased in every state but Hawaii, Idaho, and Kentucky by the end of 2013.

The states each imprisoned 5 percent fewer sentenced prisoners than at the end of 2012.

Overall, the combined populations of state and federal prisons rose by 4,300 inmates to 1,574,700 at the end of 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics.

The bureau found that while states’ prison populations increased by about 6,300 during 2013, the federal prison count decreased by about 1,900 inmates, the first decline in the federal prison population since 1980.

The report, which drills down into various statistics and demographic data, can be found online.
