Sinkhole repairs finished; Kailua Road reopens
The gateway into Kailua for traffic arriving from Honolulu has been reopened, city officials reported.
Road crews finished coating about 200 feet of sewer pipe with a resin lining near the intersection of Kailua Road and Hamakua Drive, the last key step to fixing the sinkhole mess that clogged traffic in the area since July 11.
Crews finished that work early Sunday, according to Jesse Broder Van Dyke, a spokesman for Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.
Last week, new pipe was installed to replace the broken, corroded concrete pipe that burst, causing a sinkhole and prompting the closure of two Kailua-bound lanes.
The roadway will be restriped sometime within the next week, according to Mark Yonamine, the city’s Deputy Director of Design and Construction.
