Video shows thief stealing cameras at Waipahu school
A burglar apparently took more than $10,000 in cameras July 11 from Waipahu Intermediate School.
Neal Rivera, manager for the Waipahu Olelo Community Media Center, which shares space with the school, said he turned in video surveillance footage to police on July 21 or thereabouts of the 4 a.m. July 11 break-in.
Rivera said the footage shows a lone man arriving on a bicycle, then leaving, carrying out a large camera, two laptops and two smaller cameras.
“I was amazed how he carried all that on a bike,” he said.
Rivera said the thief in the July 11 break-in at the Olelo media center stole an Apple MacBook Pro and a Sony NXSU camera, worth about $3,700. The school also had a laptop, valued at about $3,700, and two smaller cameras, each worth about $300, taken.
It is a loss for the community, which uses Olelo’s limited resources to videotape programs, Rivera said. It is also a big loss for the school, which is starting soon and is out two cameras and a laptop, he added.

Rivera said the school was broken into on the Fourth of July weekend and in November as well. He noted the school is not fully gated, making it easy for someone to come onto the campus.
“It’s just been a string of criminal activity in this area,” Rivera said. “You don’t feel safe and secure because of all this activity.”
