Police were searching for a gunman Wednesday after he robbed a Wendy’s restaurant in Royal Kunia, the latest in a string of armed robberies at businesses on Oahu.
Police said the man was last seen fleeing Wendy’s, 94-615 Kupuohi St., about 7:45 a.m.
During the robbery, employees fled to Flagship FastLube, an auto service center that shares the parking lot with Wendy’s.
Tezrah Sotelo, a cashier at Flagship FastLube, called police after restaurant employees told her they were being robbed and that the manager was still inside. She said the gunman left the restaurant through a back door, carrying a long firearm.
"He wasn’t running very fast," she said. "He was small, short, scrawny."
Sotelo said Wendy’s opens at 9 a.m. and was closed at the time of the robbery.
Ray Galdeira, another employee at Flagship FastLube, said he saw the man enter the restaurant before the robbery, wearing an orange T-shirt and then leaving with a cloth over his face and a long-sleeve burgundy dress shirt. He said the man apparently knew the back door was open because he didn’t try the front door.
He said the man also dropped money as he fled.
In the past month, there have been at least seven other armed robberies of businesses on Oahu:
