Cooking fire destroys Waipahu house

A Waipahu family’s home was destroyed Tuesday, possibly because of an unattended cooking fire, but no one was injured.
The fire displaced a family of eight, including six adults and two children: a 4-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl.
All eight were home at the time and got out safely.
Honolulu Fire Department spokes-man David Jen-kins said the family reported that one family member was cooking and left a pot of oil unattended, which family members say they think was the source of the fire.
An HFD investigator was on scene Tuesday to determine the cause.
Eight fire companies and 32 personnel responded to the 3:01 p.m. alarm at 94-074 Awa-moku St. The fire was brought under control at 3:19 p.m., 10 minutes after the first company arrived on scene.

The house was considered a total loss. The fire caused an estimated $450,000 in damage.
Emergency Medical Services evaluated the residents, but no one required treatment for injuries. A male family member had his hair singed but was uninjured.
