Matson Inc. delivered close to $1 million in charitable contributions to Hawaii nonprofits last year as part of a corporate giving program established in mid-2012.

The company, Hawaii’s largest ocean cargo transportation firm, said it made donations worth $1.6 million to 456 nonprofits in Hawaii, the mainland and other Pacific regions including Guam. Hawaii nonprofits were awarded the biggest share totaling $993,368.

Matson makes the contributions in the form of money, material goods and services through its Matson Foundation.

The foundation was set up in July 2012 as part of Matson’s separation from former parent company Alexander & Baldwin Inc. Prior to that, charitable contributions were made through the A&B Foundation, which is now dissolved. A&B set up its own new foundation, the A&B Kokua Giving Program, as part of the separation.

Matson said it donated $617,000 during the second half of 2012, bringing its 18-month charitable spending to $2.2 million. More information about Matson’s charitable giving program can be found in the foundation’s annual report available at matson.com/foundation.
