Isaiah Pu-Akima, 17, was wrapping up a pig-hunting trip Thursday when the vehicle he was driving went off Hana Highway in Honomanu in East Maui and plunged 300 feet, exploding into flames, according to his Hana High School volleyball coach, Manuel Oliveira.
Pu-Akima, a senior at the school, had been planning a graduation luau. The teen died at the scene of the crash, Maui police said Thursday.
An 18-year-old man who was a passenger in the vehicle was thrown from it but managed to climb up the cliff and call for help after the accident, which happened at about 12:28 a.m.
Pu-Akima was a middle back and an outside hitter for Hana High’s volleyball team. The team is scheduled to complete its regular season Friday with a game against Seabury Hall.
"He was a good kid, very respectful," Oliveira said. "We’re surely going to miss him."
Maui police said the compact sport utility vehicle was pulling a trailer in the Kahului direction on Hana Highway when the vehicle veered to the right about 1.6 miles north of Lower Keanae Road, stuck a guardrail and dropped 300 feet down the cliff.
The vehicle landed on lava rocks on the shoreline and burst into flames, police said.
Maui police said Pu-Akima and his passenger were not wearing seat belts.
The accident marked the 10th traffic fatality on Maui this year, compared with four for the same date last year.
Police said the cause of the crash was under investigation.
