The Hawaiian Humane Society’s Canine Game Day, 1 to 5 p.m. May 3 at Blaisdell Park, is a chance for our four-legged friends to enjoy a day of activities such as obstacle and agility courses, doggie massages and a doggie pool. This week we break away from our usual human-food recipes to present a few for canines.
SWEET POTATO DOG TREATS
1 cup Okinawan sweet potato, cooked and mashed
2-1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/4 cup poi
2 eggs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, mix sweet potato, flour, poi and eggs to form dough.
On well-floured surface, roll dough to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out strips with a knife or into shapes using a cookie cutter.
Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake 35 to 45 minutes. Cool 10 minutes; remove to wire rack. Makes 4 dozen.

DOGGIE COOKIES (FOR KITTIES, TOO!)
2 cups wheat germ
3 (2.5-ounce) jars strained chicken baby food
1 tablespoon water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In medium bowl, mix wheat germ, baby food and water; add more water if necessary to form a dough.
Roll into 1-inch balls; place on cookie sheet. Flatten slightly with fork dipped in water. Bake 20 to 25 minutes. Makes 2 dozen.

FAVORITE HOMEMADE DOG FOOD
1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground chicken
1/2 pound ground turkey
3 cups brown rice
3 cups low-sodium chicken broth
2 cups water
2 small baking potatoes, chopped
1 pound baby carrots, chopped
3 eggs, slightly beaten
In large pot, cook all ground meats together. Add rice, chicken broth and water and cook on medium for 30 minutes.
Add potatoes, carrots and eggs and cook additional 20 to 30 minutes.
Put into storage containers and refrigerate or freeze. Mix into dry dog food and serve. Makes 24 servings.
