If Punahou wants to beat Kamehameha’s Kama Dung, it is going to need to start chanting some songs she doesn’t know.

Dung responded to the Buffanblu’s dugout chants with a two-hitter and Kamehameha beat Punahou 6-0 at Punahou on Wednesday, earning a regular-season split with the defending state champions.

"Every time Punahou gets someone on base, they get really hyped, like beyond hyped," Dung said. "I don’t know, I like to sing with them because it is a little stressful, but I know my girls are there behind me."

Dung, who was chased after three innings in the first meeting between the teams, was nearly untouchable on Wednesday. She walked Sarah Sumida, who blasted a three-run home run against her in the first game, to lead off the game, then retired her next 16 batters. 

Punahou’s only threats to her dominance came in the bottom of the first when Sumida streaked from first to third on Kamehameha catcher Rachel Ogasawara’s errant pickoff throw, but after two strikeouts Sumida was erased when she was late to the plate after a passed ball. 

"Kama pitched a great game," Punahou coach Bobby Makahilahila said. "She spotted her ball and came with the changeup and kept us off balance all game. We got to her early last time; this time she kept us down."

The only other two times Punahou got a runner past first base, Dung struck out the next batter. The last of her nine strikeouts came on a brutal changeup to Amber Popovich to end the game. She threw 67 of her 110 pitches for strikes.

"I have my different changeups for different scenarios," Dung said. "Coach called a great game today, and that one I was going for a strike, but a strike that she wouldn’t hit, so I pulled it a little forward."

Dung had wiggle room because Kamehameha put up six runs.

Kamehameha’s Brooke Sauer jumped on a 1-1 inside changeup and muscled it uphill and into the wind on Punahou’s slanted field for an easy home run. Punahou pitcher Nicole Nishizaki got out of that inning, but the Warriors came back to score three more in the third on four hits. Katelyn Mahelona scored from third, when Rachel Dumlao tried to steal second and Punahou went after her, then Christine Hipa and Kalei Kaneshiro each doubled in a run. 

Kamehameha scored twice more in the sixth on an error off a single by Dung and a sharp single to center by Kiana Burnett.

The teams warmed up for their clash by completing Punahou’s win from March 8 at Kamehameha, where umpires called the wrong runner out for interference. Officials forced the teams to complete that game with a runner on third and two outs and Punahou up 4-2. Nishizawa ended it after one batter, though, forcing Kalei Kaneshiro to pop out to first on a 3-2 pitch. 

"This is a huge confidence booster," Dung said. "Looking at all of my teammates happy over there after the game makes me feel good because in the beginning of the season I didn’t know if we were going to pull this all together."
