Comedian-actor-TV personality Andy Bumatai will host a fundraising motorcycle ride from Honolulu to Kahuku to benefit the Bobby Benson Center on Saturday.
The ride will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Montgomery Powersports, 550 N. Nimitz Highway, and finish at noon at the Bobby Benson Center, 56-660 Kamehameha Highway in Kahuku.
A concert, silent auction, food booths and other events will follow until 2 p.m.
The ride is free hop on your motorcycle at the starting point but there is a $20 admission for the concert featuring Taimane and the Kailua Bay Buddies.
"The goal of the Bobby Benson Center is to return teens to their schools and communities with the skills to remain drug- and alcohol-free and to mature successfully in today’s world," said David Benson, the center’s founder and a member of the board of directors, in a statement. "We are excited about this fundraising event and appreciate the support of the community’s motorcycle enthusiasts and the general public."
Bumatai participates in regular end-of-the-month rides with a group of other bikers, and is dedicating this month’s event to raise funds for the Benson organization, according to Haumea Ho, a Bobby Benson Center board member.
"I’ve been packing’ with him the last couple of months," said Ho, referring to riding as a passenger on Bumatai’s motorcycle. She is the widow of entertainer Don Ho, one of the Waikiki stars who embraced Bumatai’s comedy over the decades.
The circuitous Oahu route often assembles a caravan of 100 motorcyclists who ride under strict road and safety rules.
Celebrity items will be up for grabs on Saturday, Ho said. "Peter Fonda has been kind enough to donate a personally signed Troy Lee Design Peter Fonda’ helmet," she said, and Steve McQueen’s widow, Barbara, is donating memorabilia related to the late actor. Singer and restaurateur Jimmy Buffet is offering a frozen-margarita blender.
The Bobby Benson Center is named after the 15-year-old son of center founder David Benson, a former major with the Honolulu Police Department. Bobby Benson died in 1984 after a life troubled by drug abuse, and the center named after him provides therapy and guidance for teens help unavailable to him during his time of need.
