A Marine Corps 10-wheeler caught on fire Thursday afternoon, causing its fuel tank to fail and lose most of its 150 gallons of diesel fuel on the H-1 freeway near Makakilo, a fire official said.

Police shut down some westbound lanes of the the H-1 before the Makakilo offramp for four hours after the 1:10 p.m. fire.

Capt. Terry Seelig said the driver and a passenger of the OshKosh LVSR (logistics vehicle system replacement) cargo vehicle pulled over when they saw smoke. (The vehicle was not hauling anything at the time of the fire.)

He said the fire started in the engine compartment, and the diesel fuel dripped down and flowed under the truck, damaging the fuel tank.

Firefighters first doused the fire with compressed air foam, then used absorbent material to try to stop the diesel from running into the storm drain, but most of it went down the storm drain.

Fire officials notified the Department of Health and the Coast Guard, but determined the fuel had not reached any waterways that lead to the ocean. The Marine Corps, under DOT and Coast Guard oversight, will clean up the spill.
