Police arrest man, 71, suspected in fatal Waipahu stabbing

A 71-year-old Waipahu man is in police custody suspected of being one two men involved in an argument Sunday that ended with the death of a 42-year-old man.

The suspect was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of second-degree murder of Marlo G. Basuel. The victim, police said, got into an argument with two other men at a house party when he was stabbed several times.

Paramedics took Basuel from a Kahuanani Street home at 9:48 p.m. Sunday to a hospital in “extremely critical condition.” He did at the hospital three hours later.

Police reports said that Basuel was involved in a fight with two other men.

During the fight, one of the suspects stabbed Basuel several times and fled.

Police at this point are not saying if the 71-year-old man is the primary suspect. The police have not said whether the weapon used in the incident has been recovered.

The suspect has no prior criminal record.

Honolulu homicide detectives are investigating a second murder this week, following the death of a homeless man found outside a Kailua restaurant late Monday night with multiple stab wounds.

On Monday, a 37-year-old homeless man was stabbed while sleeping in an area on Uluniu Street in Kailua near Cinnamon’s Restaurant. Friends identified the victim as Scott Macmillan, a Kalaheo High School graduate, and former chef at Lucy’s Grill & Bar and Island Fusion. Dozens of friends of Macmillan filed tributes to the former Kailua resident on a Facebook page.

He was taken in extremely critical condition to the hospital about 11:45 p.m and died at the hospital.

The wanted man is described as in his 20s, 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 4 inches tall, with a slim build and has dark, curly or bushy hair. He was wearing a dark-colored long-sleeve shirt or hoodie, dark-colored pants, and a baseball or skull cap and carried a black backpack.

No suspects have been arrested.

Police said in the Kailua incident, a witness said there was a commotion in the alley and a man fled, leaving the victim with multiple stab wounds. The victim was taken to hospital where he died.

Police believe the victim and the witness were both homeless men.

Monday’s stabbing with second murder involving a homeless man in Kailua in the past six months.

On July 12, another homeless man, Robert Coleman, 48, was stabbed in Kailua District Park. Another homeless man Brian Kim, 58, was charged with second-degree murder.

Three other homeless men have been victims of street crimes in the past three months.

>> Lynn Riley, 49, was killed Oct. 1 in Aala Park. Ronald Page, 58, and also homeless, was charged with second-degree murder. The Medical Examiner’s Office said Riley died of bleeding within the skull due to blunt force injury from the assault.

>> Mamerto “Eddie” Semana, 83, died Dec. 5. He was found unconscious in Chinatown with head injuries a day earlier. R.J. Marsolo was charged with second-degree murder and third-degree assault. The Medical Examiner’s Office said Semana died from blunt force injuries to his head.

>> Anthony Montero, 62, also known as Paul A. Manner, who identified himself as a freelance journalist and also ran unsuccessfully for political office, was killed Dec. 27. Montero was reportedly attacked by a group of teenagers near the corner of South King and Punahou streets, where he had been sleeping. Police have charged a 16-year-old boy from Palolo with second-dgree murder.
