Maui beach reopened after tests showed no waste-water contamination
A portion of Kaanapali Beach adjacent to Canoe Beach closed due to sewage discharge from an accidental connection of a temporary sewer line to a storm drain in west Maui was reopened Thursday afternoon after tests of water showed no contamination.
Ledcor Construction Hawaii LLC notified the state Department of Health when the discharge was detected Wednesday morning at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa. Ledcor said it and its subcontractors took immediate measures to correct the sewer connection and prevent further discharge.
It is believed that some of the waste water may have entered an aqua duct and retention area adjacent to a nearby golf course and hotel.
Ledcor said it hasn’t determined the amount of sewage discharged, and Ledcor and its subcontractors have started cleaning operations and removal of any residual excess in the identified areas.
