Trial date set in fatal Big Island truck-bike crash

HILO » A 27-year-old Mountain View driver will stand trial Feb. 18 on charges of manslaughter and negligent homicide in the death of a bicyclist.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Siaiku Lucky Aholelei pleaded not guilty Monday in the Sept. 27 death of 66-year-old Cenon Visaya.

An eyewitness at a preliminary hearing Oct. 1 said Aholelei appeared to be "playing tag" with another truck when the crash occurred. Nerissa De Lima testified that Aholelei lost control of his pickup on Volcano Highway, crossed the median and slammed into Visaya.

Visaya died at the scene.

Hilo Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura refused a request by Aholelei’s attorney to reduce bail from $275,000 to $150,000.

He also denied a request to allow Aholelei to fly to Las Vegas to help move his family move.
