State, Maui and Honolulu civil defense officials are investigating what caused the malfunction that triggered sirens early this morning in Pearl City and various areas on Maui.

Police reported that sirens in the Leeward Oahu were touched off at 1:18 a.m. Initial checks by police determined there were no emergencies. The sirens went located off on Waimano Home Road. It was determined to be a malfunction. State Civil Defense crews will repair the malfunctioning siren today.

On Maui, sirens were sounded in various areas beginning at 2:15 a.m. No emergencies were reported.
