Both the Federal Aviation Agency and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash of a single-engine aircraft that went down in a pineapple field a mile south of Wheeler Army Airfield Tuesday with two men on board.

The aircraft was originally reported to be a helicopter, but the FAA provided updated information on the crash this morning. 

The Federal Fire Department and Hono­lulu Police Department responded to a distress call at 5:15 p.m. by the Wheeler Army Airfield control tower, according to a Navy statement.

The civilian pilot and passenger got out of the aircraft on their own, said Agnes Tauyan, Navy spokeswoman.

The federal fire department provided medical treatment at the scene and transported the two men to a hospital for further evaluation and medical treatment.

Allen Kenitzer, FAA spokesman, said the aircraft was an American Champion single-engine fixed wing plane that reported engine trouble and landed a mile from Wheeler Airfield.

A NTSB spokesman in Washington, D.C. said the agency is still collecting information on the crash, although it was not registered as a major incident.

The aircraft is registered to a civil engineering business, according to FAA records.
