Firefighters responded to the scene of a automobile rollover on Likelike Highway this morning. A man, in his 30s, and a woman, in her 40s, were ejected from the vehicle.

A 43-year-old Kalihi man returning from a fishing trip in Hauula apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his SUV on the Likelike Highway early this morning and was killed when he ran off the road, flipping his sport utility vehicle.

Also injured in the 2:55 a.m. accident was his wife, 42, who was sleeping in the back seat of the SUV. She is listed in stable condition at the hospital.

The husband was not wearing a seat belt, said Lt. Bobby Towne, Police Department spokesman, and was ejected from the SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner identified him as Jason Levy of Honolulu.

The woman was not thrown from the car, Towne said.

Towne said couple was on their way home after fishing in Hauula when the accident occurred.

Towne said speed was not a factor in the crash and that it is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved.

Portions of the Likelike Highway on the Honolulu side of the Wilson Tunnel were closed for three hours for the traffic investigation and were reopened at 6:15 a.m.

The accident occurred in the town-bound lane of the Likelike Highway by Kula Kolea Drive.

This was Oahu’s 41st traffic death this year, compared to 43 at the same time a year ago.
