The president of Palau is visiting Hawaii this weekend to celebrate Palau’s President’s Day with local Palauans, visit local communities and share his experiences in helping his island nation preserve its local culture and natural resources.
Palau is an archipelago of 340 islands about 600 miles east of the Philippines.
President Thomas Remengesau earned recognition from Time magazine in 2007 as a "hero of the environment" for his commitment to preserving 30 percent of Palau’s near-shore marine resources and 20 percent of terrestrial resources by 2020.
Remengesau will attend a reception hosted by Gov. Neil Abercrombie from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at Washington Place.
Remengesau will celebrate Palauan President’s Day on Saturday on Oahu. He will also give public talks at the University of Hawaii Maui College on Sunday and Hokuloa Church on Hawaii island Monday.
