A change in the winds means an increased chance of afternoon and evening showers into next week and the possibility of vog returning to Oahu.

Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued and then canceled a flood advisory for Hawaii island because of rain, some locally heavy, over the southeast slopes of Mauna Loa.

The National Weather Service says the potential for heavy afternoon and evening showers will linger over the state as a series of disturbances in the atmosphere moves over the islands.

The trade winds are starting to weaken and the unstable atmosphere makes showers more likely until the trade winds return.

The forecast for Honolulu calls for a 50 percent chance of rain tonight and a chance of heavy afternoon showers Sunday.

“We’re transitioning from trades to a light winds,” said Robert Ballard, a National Weather Service forecaster. “It means the weather is going to be a little more unsettled. You’ll see more showers, especially in the afternoons in the interior sections.’

Ballard said vog may also return to Oahu next week.

“Vog is a possibility,” Ballard said. “Once we start seeing this extended period of light winds, we may start seeing more in the way of vog.”

Trade winds may not return until late next week, Ballard said.
