The city Medical Examiner’s Office is seeking the public’s help to identify a man whose body was found on the reef off Sand Island by a kayaker Thursday morning.

Officials described the man as between 20 and 40 years old, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 180 to 200 pounds. He had short, dark hair but no apparent facial hair or noticeable scars.

The department released photos of two of his tattoos. The word "freedom" in an Old English script font is across his upper back. A second tattoo depicts an eagle or phoenix on his upper middle chest. Both tattoos are in black ink only.

He was found wearing an olive green Ezekiel T-shirt and black Under Armour shorts with small white polka dots. He had no shoes or slippers.

Anyone with information on this case should call 768-3090 and ask for the on-duty investigator.

An autopsy will be performed today. There does not appear to be any evidence of foul play, the department said.

The kayaker spotted the body at about 10:30 a.m. on the reef on the Ewa side of Kalihi Channel.

Firefighters retrieved the body and turned it over to police and to medical examiners at the Keehi Lagoon boat ramp at the Marine Education Center.

Honolulu police classified the incident as an unattended death pending investigation.
