Jury selection begins in federal agent’s murder trial
State Department special agent Christopher Deedy was in court Friday to prepare for jury selection in his trial in the 2011 shooting death of Kollin Elderts. Deedy’s wife, Stephanie, sat in the gallery behind him.
Jury selection opened this morning for the trial of State Department special agent Christopher Deedy on a charge of murdering a Kailua man in a 2011 shooting at a Waikiki McDonald’s restaurant.
Circuit Judge Karen Ahn told a group of potential jurors that they expect to complete selecting the jury by May 27.
Opening statements for the trial are scheduled for July 1. The trial is expected to be completed by Aug. 23.
Deedy, 28, is charged with shooting Kollin Elderts, 23, at about 2:45 a.m. Nov. 5, 2011 at the McDonald’s Kuhio Avenue restaurant.
Deedy, a Virginia resident, was here to provide security for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.
He has been free on $250,000 bail.
