April Fool’s Day prank prompts 9-1-1 calls over lava flow

An April Fool’s Day prank by a Hawaii island radio station created problems for Hawaii County police Monday.

Police put out a public information statement after receiving numerous 911 calls when the unidentified radio station posted on its website that the Saddle Road was closed at the 28-mile marker because of lava flow.

Police told the public that no lava flow ever threatened to close Saddle Road Monday.

The false report was an April Fool’s Day prank, police said, adding that Saddle Road is open and there is no lava flow anywhere near that area.
