Fire rescue personnel assisted hikers in two separate incidents that occurred three minutes apart Friday afternoon.

Fire Capt. Gary Lum said the first rescue was of a man in his 40s who was hiking on the Diamond Head Crater trail when he started getting dizzy and lightheaded.

The Fire Department dispatchd a rescue crew, a battalion chief, a ladder and an engine company as well as a helicopter.

The man was airlifted off the trail about 1:40 p.m. and turned over to the Emergency Medical Services.

Lum said the man may have had a pre-existing medical condition, which may have affected him.

The Fire Department helicopter was dispatched to Koko Crater when two hikers hiked up the crater from inside.

When they got to the rim and reached a high point, the soil was unstable and crumbly, so they didn’t want to go up or down, Lum said.

The helicopter crew picked up the hikers and put them down on the ground at 2:05 p.m.
