Gov. Neil Abercrombie joined Jack Lucas, president of WestCoast Entertainment, Jack Eldon of Disney Theatrical Productions and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell in making the announcement Tuesday at Washington Place.
Abercrombie noted that the show was seen by more than 180,000 people and generated more than $45 million in economic activity when it played the Blaisdell Concert Hall for three months in 2007.
Caldwell estimated that more than 120,000 people will see it this time and predicted the show will generate more than $30 million in total spending.
The show, based on the 1994 Disney animated film with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, is in its 16th year on Broadway and continues to be one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. It is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions and has been translated into Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese.
The North American touring production that is returning to Honolulu has been seen by more than 14 million people.
