Kauai spearfisherman who apparently drowned is identified
A 35-year-old man apparently drowned while spearfishing with friends Thursday, the 10th drowning on Kauai so far this year.
He is identified as John-Eric Parinas of Eleele.
At about 9 p.m. Thursday, Parinas was diving in waters off Glass Beach when he suffered a muscle cramp and attempted to make his way back to shore. He was reportedly swept away by waves while walking along a rock ledge, according to a news release by the Kauai Fire Department.
Friends located Parinas underwater, brought him to shore and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Firefighters transported Parinas to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
