Rainbow Wahine topple Highlanders

Hawaii remained in the hunt for a share of the Big West women’s basketball championship with a 67-57 win over UC Riverside on Thursday at the Stan Sherrif Center.

UH improved to 12-5 in the conference and 16-12 overall (its most wins in seven seasons) and remained in third place in the Big West, a game behind Cal Poly. Pacific is atop the league at 13-4 with one game left for each of the contenders.

The Rainbow Wahine led 39-28 at halftime as Kamilah Martin had 12 of her 21 points before the break.

Riverside (4-13, 11-17) got a game-high 23 points from Brittany Crain.

Vicky Tagalicod added a season-high 18 for UH, including back-to-back jumpers to give the Wahine a 43-39 lead after the Highlanders had battled back to tie it early in the second half. Hawaii led the rest of the way.

The Wahine complete the regular season Saturday with a home game against Cal State Fullerton. The careers of Tagalicod, Kanisha Bello, Monica DeAngelis and Stephanie Ricketts will be celebrated on senior night.
