Windy, wintery weather will stick around for a few more days, but National Weather Service forecasters have dropped a wind advisory for Oahu and Kauai as the gusty trade winds that knocked down trees and utility poles over the holiday weekend begins to lessen.

“It’s come down a little bit but it looks like it’s going to continue into Thursday,” said Mike Cantin, a forecaster with the Honolulu office of the weather service. “There’s going to be periods of strengthening winds at times.”

Winds on Oahu have dropped to about 20 mph with higher gusts in some areas, Cantin said.

Moderate to heavy showers in the Windward and mauka areas of Hawaii island and Maui have prompted flood advisories for those islands through 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., respectively.

A high surf advisory for east shores of most islands is also in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday. Waves are expected to have 7- to 10-foot faces with higher sets.

The cooler weather and moisture in the trade wind flow brought snow to Mauna Kea overnight.

Cantin said temperatures have dropped to freezing at the 9,000-foot level.

There’s a chance of snow and freezing rain on the summits again tonight.

A strong area of high pressure northeast of the islands is causing the gusty winds. Cantin said there’s no sign yet of the high pressure system weakening significantly.

The winds continued to keep crews busy on several islands.

On Molokai, firefighters responded to a report of a roof that blew off a home in the Kapuaiwa grove in Kalamaula shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday. A 20-foot-by-20-foot section of roof, consisting of roof paper and asphalt covering, had detached and was hanging over the side of the house, firefighters said.

On Oahu, police reopened Kamehameha Highway at Kipapa Gulch to all vehicles Tuesday afternoon after low hanging wires were put back into place.
