Ducks blank Rainbows in UH baseball season opener

Two Oregon pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the visiting Ducks beat Hawaii 3-0 in the baseball season-opener for both teams Friday.

A sellout crowd of 3,498 (turnstile) at Les Murakami Stadium saw the Rainbows suffer a shutout in their first game of the season for the first time since 1971.

Ducks starter Jake Reed went six inning allowing just four hits to earn the win. He struck out seven and walked two.

Christian Jones gave up a single in the final three innings for a save.

Scott Squier started and went 4 2/3 innings for UH, yielding two runs. He allowed four hits and walked three while striking out two.

Oregon scored its first run in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk, as J.J. Altobelli worked a two-out free pass off Squier, plating Kyle Garlick.

The Ducks added single runs in the fifth and seventh.

Hawaii left just five runners on base, but was victim of two Oregon double plays.

Newcomers had four of Hawaii’s hits, including left fielder Adam Hurley with two. His second-inning double gave UH its first baserunner of the season.
