Honolulu police investigated two separate early morning crashes Sunday that injured five men, at least one critically. 

A Toyota Scion crashed into a coconut tree on Kahala Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. sending one man to the hospital in critical condition and seriously injuring two others, police said.

Paramedics took a 29-year-old man to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition with internal bleeding and two other men, ages 29 and 44, to the hospital in serious condition after the accident near Hunakai Street.

Police said the 29-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel. Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The two passengers were visiting from Australia. All three were wearing seat belts, police said.

Police closed Kahala Avenue between Koloa and Hunakai streets until about 7:30 a.m. while they investigated the scene.

Police also closed Lunalilo and Piikoi streets until about 7 a.m. after a 3:08 a.m. accident that seriously injured two other men.

Police said a 1996 Honda Civic heading mauka on Piikoi was speeding when it ran a red light and hit a 2002 Nissan Sentra traveling Ewa on Lunalilo Street.

Paramedics took the 20-year-old driver of the Civic and the 38-year-old driver of the Sentra to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition.
