Hawaii County police on Thursday charged a Hilo man with murder in connection with a shooting at the Hilo bay front in December.
Mark A. Whyne, 55, who has no permanent address, was charged with second-degree murder and five firearm counts. He was being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court today.
On Dec. 29, police received calls about gunshots fired near Mooheau Park. Officers found a man identified as Faatetai Fiu of Hilo there.
An autopsy determined that Fiu died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Whyne was already in custody on three firearm-related offenses before his arrest on the new charges.
