Hawaii County police have identified a body found off the “Tree Planting Road” near Stainback Highway in Hilo as a 44-year-old Hawaiian Acres man who was initially reported missing and later determined to be a murder victim. 

Dante Peter Gilman was identified through dental records. 

Police are withholding a cause of death pending additional forensic analysis. Police are also working with an anthropologist from the Joint POW Accounting Command/Central Identification Laboratory from the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Oahu to perform additional examinations. 

Police had been searching the area for the body of Gilman when they received an anonymous tip about a body near the road and discovered Gilman’s body.

On Jan. 18, police discovered another body in the area. That body was identified through dental records last week as Shayne Yoshi Kalani Kobayashi, 38, who had been reported missing on Dec. 11 from his Pahoa home. 

Kobayashi was a witness in the 1999 murder trial that resulted in the convictions of Frank Pauline Jr. for the Christmas Eve 1991 kidnapping, rape and murder of Dana Ireland. Kobayashi testified he had been drinking with Pauline and brothers Ian and Shawn Schweitzer when Ireland rode by on a bicycle.

Foul play is suspected in Kobayashi’s death. Police have not made any arrests in Kobayashi’s case.

Police arrested and charged Claude Keone Krause, 30, and his cousin, Kawena Krause, 19,  for the alleged murder of Gillman earlier this month, before the Gilman’s body was found.

According to court documents, the two cousins were seen committing the crime on video surveillance from Gilman’s home on Dec. 29.

Police said the surveillance footage shows one man, who appears to be Claude Krause, pointing a rifle at Gilman and shooting him.

Subsequent footage shows a person who appears to be Kawena Krause, “applying a chokehold on Gilman while on the ground until his body goes limp,” the document said.

Claude Keone Krause is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, second-degree theft, two counts of ownership/possession of a prohibited firearm, and use of  firearm in the commission of a separate felony.
