A North Carolina man is scheduled to appear in Honolulu federal court to face charges he defrauded the University of Hawaii.

Prosecutors say Mark Hubbard scammed the school out of $200,000 intended as a deposit for a Stevie Wonder concert that never happened.

Hubbard is scheduled to have his initial appearance before Judge Kevin Chang today. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Another man pleaded guilty to delivering the money and is cooperating with authorities.

The indictment says Hubbard convinced a local promoter that he had connections with a former Motown Records executive who could secure Wonder for a fundraiser show on Aug. 18.

The school paid $200,000 as a deposit, but learned after starting to sell tickets that neither the singer nor his representatives authorized the concert.
