A bill banning smoking at some beach parks in Honolulu passed a City Council Committee today.

A bill banning smoking at several major Honolulu beach parks cleared the City Council’s Safety, Economic Development and Government Affairs Committee today.

The bill, introduced by Councilman Stanley Chang, would bar smoking at Kapiolani Park, Kuhio Beach, Duke Kahanamoku Beach Park, the beach side of Ala Moana Park, and Sandy Beach Park.

The vote was 4-1. Councilman Tom Berg was the lone “no” saying that any ban should be applied islandwide, if not statewide.

Safety Chairman Nestor Garcia, heading his last committee meeting before his term expires, backed off asking his colleagues to consider a ban at all city beaches and parks on Oahu.

Members Carol Fukunaga and Breene Harimoto said they would have supported a plan for an islandwide ban.
