Large quake hits Colombia but does not generate Pacific-wide tsunami
A large earthquake struck southwestern Colombia this morning but did not generate a destructive tsunami, officials said.
The 7.1-magnitude temblor was centered 31 miles south of the regional capital ofPopayan, Columbia, and 203 miles northeast of Quito, Ecuador, at 11:31 a.m. (6:31 a.m. Hawaii time) at a depth of about 93 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was initially estimated at 7.4 magnitude.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach issued a statement saying that no Pacific-wide tsunami was generated and that there was no threat to Hawaii.
