Lahaina Sugar Cane train collides with car
A Lahaina “Sugar Cane” train collided with a 2001 Honda sedan Monday, but no one was injured and both the train and the car received only minor damage, police said.
Police said a Lahaina man was turning right near the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and Puukolii Road, and apparently failed to look left at the oncoming train and drove into its path, police said.
The train, which travels through the cane fields from Lahaina to Kaanapali, had already been slowing down.
The accident occurred at about 4:35 p.m. The train was traveling in the Honokowai direction.
According to the police report, all the train’s signals were working. The train’s engineer and crew followed all standard precautionary measures in accord with federal guidelines, police said.
