San Diego Zoo vets say newest panda is a boy
SAN DIEGO » It’s a boy. Veterinarians say the 6-week-old panda cub at the San Diego Zoo is a boy.
Vets determined the gender of the young cub during its latest health exam Thursday.
Dr. Meg Sutherland Smith told U-T San Diego the cub weighed a bit less than Bai Yun’s five other cubs, but it appears healthy and gained one pound in the last week to bring it to 3.2 pounds.
Vets say the cub’s ear canals are beginning to open but its eyes are still closed.
Chinese tradition allows the panda to be named after 100 days and the zoo plans to again ask for suggestions from the public.
The endangered giant pandas are on research loan to the San Diego Zoo from China.
